Gerneral Information Current Group

For children to be successful in mainstream school settings, it is critical that they are able to learn in group settings. However, without proper training, children with autism may find it very difficult. They often demonstrate inattention, disruptive behavior and minimal interest in their peers.

In most cases, children with autism need to be taught systematically how to learn in groups. With specific targets goals and ongoing evaluations, we assess progress and identify challenges in critical areas. Each child has a well-developed Individual Educational Plan to teach them how to be an active member of the group and develop interests and initiation towards their peers. We offer a number of group programs to facilitate development of group learning skills and relationship building skills so our students would be better prepared for social settings and school placements.

Structure of Groups
Each group has a high staff ratio so we can meet the unique learning needs of different children. They learn through an array of group activities such as sports, circle time, group lessons, group games, structured activities and free play. These activities are specifically designed to facilitate social interaction and create opportunities to practice different target skills.

Child’s Progress
With highly individualized educational plans (I.E.P.) , their individual learning goals and target skills are mapped out clearly at different stages. I.E.P.s are set based on each child’s needs in accordance to their skill deficits in social areas such as making friends, developing social interest, and proper social interactions. Target skills will be broken down into teachable parts according to the level of the child. Sometimes, a behavioral plan for the individual child may also be devised if necessary.

The child’s progress is monitored closely and their target skills and programs are reviewed on an on-going basis to ensure that children’s learning outcome is maximized. Data is collected every session to keep an accurate account of the children’s learning curve; in other words, for every target skill taught, there is a record of data. As necessary, meetings are arranged to allow parents to share and provide vital information about their children’s progress and development and also, allow us to evaluate goals and modify programs to cater for the child’s learning needs.
